Overview

The Rongai route, renowned for its picturesque vistas, guides climbers towards Kibo from Kilimanjaro’s less-traveled and dry northeastern region. Commencing near the Kenyan border, this path presents awe-inspiring panoramas of the African savannah and the rugged terrain of Mawenzi. Following the Mawenzi Tarn Camp, trekkers encounter Kilimanjaro National Park’s singular mountain lake. The trail, well-established, meanders through fir forests, rainforests, and alpine deserts. While generally deemed as an easier route, some segments in the summit area, characterized by rocky terrain, may pose greater challenges. The descent retraces the Marangu route, passing through lush, verdant rainforests via well-kept pathways. Mandatory overnight stays in mountain tents are required throughout the ascent.

Tour Plan

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, our transfer driver will warmly welcome you and transport you to a hotel in Arusha. The remainder of the day is entirely yours to enjoy as you wish. You may choose to unwind and relax by the lodge's pool or venture out to explore the town of Arusha. Later in the afternoon, our team will provide you with a briefing, offering insights into what you can anticipate during your upcoming trek.

Following breakfast, you'll embark on a drive around Mt. Kilimanjaro towards its northwestern side. In approximately 3 to 4 hours, the journey will lead you to the Nalemoru Gate. Once the registration process is completed and your luggage has been allocated among the porters, your adventure commences. The trail initially winds beside mountain farmers' fields and pine forests before venturing into the sparse mountain forest zone, often offering glimpses of black and white colobus monkeys. After a trek of around 3 to 4 hours, you'll arrive at the Simba Camp, your overnight stop for the day. This includes provisions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The day's trek unfolds through the heather and moorland zones, offering stunning views of Mawenzi and the expansive Kenyan steppes, presenting a grand spectacle. Lunch will be served at the Second Cave (3,450 m), and following a brief respite, you'll traverse the rolling terrain to reach Kikelewa Camp. This camp presents incredible vistas, providing a tranquil atmosphere to unwind and appreciate after a challenging day's climb. The day's meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are included.

The familiar senecien vegetation will gradually vanish, giving way to a more barren landscape interspersed with occasional rock formations. In favorable weather, you can revel in the breathtaking views of the Kibo and Mawenzi summits, along with Kenya's expansive savannah grasslands. Continuing past several more rock formations, you'll reach the Mawenzi Hut, considered by many mountain climbers as the most atmospheric camp on the mountain. The day's meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are provided.

Today's journey involves a relatively straightforward path that leads you across the Kibo Saddle. This area is marked by its sparse vegetation, with only a few varieties of grass and other resilient plant species able to thrive in this dry, high-altitude environment. Just before reaching today's destination, there's one final rocky passage to overcome. Ultimately, you'll arrive at the Kibo Hut, offering a place to relax and mentally prepare for the forthcoming summit stage tomorrow. The day's meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are included.

The ascent commences at approximately 00:00 h, embarking on a 5 to 7-hour trek across frozen volcanic ash, culminating at Gillman's Point (5,715 m) on the crater's edge. As the sun's rays gradually warm your path, you'll continue trekking for another 1 to 2 hours until you reach Uhuru Peak, standing triumphantly atop "Africa's Roof". The descent, across now thawed lava ash, retraces nearly the same route, leading back to the Kibo Hut by late morning. A hearty meal awaits, providing a well-deserved break before continuing the descent toward the Horombo Hut. The day's meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are provided.

Following a trek of approximately 5 to 6 hours, you'll have completed the straightforward descent, arriving back at the Marangu Gate in the early afternoon. Here, you'll bid farewell to your mountain crew, and a brief transfer will return you to the hotel. There, you can indulge in a warm and soothing shower, celebrating your remarkable achievement. The day's meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are included.

The Wag Hill Team will arrange a private departure transfer on this day, taking you to either Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your return flight home or for a flight to Zanzibar Island, as per your travel plans.
